St Mary the Virgin, Great Dunmow, is seeking tenders for a main contractor to deliver their National Lottery Heritage Fund project which involves a series of internal alterations to the historic church building. 1. Purpose of the Role The Work Examiner is responsible for inspecting, reviewing and recording the condition, quality and compliance of works within their allocated area. The role supports safe delivery, identifies defects or non-conformances, and provides clear information to supervisors, engineers and project teams to support timely decision-making. 2. Key Responsibilities • Carry out planned examinations, inspections and site checks in line with the agreed work bank, programme and applicable standards. • Review completed or ongoing works to confirm they meet drawings, specifications, method statements, inspection and test plans, and client requirements. • Identify, record and communicate defects, safety concerns, incomplete works or areas requiring further investigation. • Produce accurate inspection records, reports, photographs and supporting evidence within agreed timescales. • Escalate urgent issues that may affect safety, quality, programme or asset integrity. • Liaise with site teams, supervisors, engineers, planners and subcontractors to coordinate access, clarify findings and support close-out of actions. • Maintain a safe system of work and comply with site rules, permits, risk assessments and relevant health, safety and environmental requirements.

The project comprises the refurbishment and standardisation of the Emergency Water Storage (EWS) infrastructure at ten locations within the Episkopi area. The works include the removal and disposal of existing fibreglass and GRP sectional water storage tanks at eight locations, modification and extension of existing concrete bases where required, and the supply and installation of 25No new 20 m³ polyethylene (PE) water storage tanks complete with associated valves, pipework and mechanical fittings. The project also includes connection of all new tanks to the existing potable water distribution network, provision of automatic tank refilling arrangements, and all associated civil, mechanical and commissioning works required to deliver fully operational and standardised EWS installations. In addition, the works include connecting the existing Emergency Water Storage tanks at two further locations to the potable water mains to provide automatic replenishment.
